Is Neosporin Good For Eyelashes? In your quest for full and fluttery lashes, you may have tried all sorts of DIY ingredients. One such ingredient you should never use is Neosporin.
You should never use Neosporin ointment anywhere near your eyes and eyelashes, as it is for the skin only and is toxic for the eyes.
You should also avoid using Neosporin Ophthalmic (for the eyes) on your eyelashes as it is designed especially for the treatment of eye infections and is only to be used as directed by your healthcare provider.
What Is Neosporin?
Neosporin is an over-the-counter ointment used to prevent minor skin infections caused by cuts, burns, or scrapes on the skin.
It is only for use on the skin and should not be used in the eyes, nose or mouth.
There is also a prescription form of Neosporin that is used to treat eye bacterial eye infections.
These formulations of Neosporin for the eye may have different names; they are called Polysporin ophthalmic ointment and Polytrim ophthalmic solution.
NEVER use Neosporin for skin in your eyes. The drug’s packaging will clearly state whether it is for ophthalmic (eye) use. If you’re not sure, ask a pharmacist.
Should You Use Neosporin On Eyelashes?
DO NOT use either kind of Neosporin on your eyelashes, even the kind that is formulated for the eyes.
Neosporin for the skin is toxic to the eyes so should not go anywhere near your eyelashes.
Neosporin Ophthalmic (for the eyes) is for the treatment of eye infections such as conjunctivitis or blepharitis. It should be used only as directed by a healthcare provider.
Misusing or overusing antibiotics can lead to their decreased effectiveness.
3 Alternative Products That Are Good For Eyelashes
If you want a safe way to take care of your eyelashes, consider investing in one of these instead:
1. Vaseline
Vaseline is an inexpensive way to get healthier-looking lashes.
It is an occlusive substance, which means it forms a layer on the skin’s surface which blocks moisture loss, keeping skin healthy and hydrated. It works the same way for your eyelashes.
Although it won’t make your eyelashes grow faster or longer, it will moisturize them and make them look fuller.
It is best used at night, after removing your makeup and washing your face. Apply a small amount with a cotton bud to your lash line, starting at the base of your lashes.
Wash off with warm water in the morning.
2. Natural Oils
Natural oils such as castor, coconut, or olive oil are great for your eyelashes. They are full of nutrients and help to moisturize and coat the lashes, protecting them from outside elements.
Castor oil is especially popular as it contains vitamin E which can help to thicken your lashes.
Again, it makes a great overnight treatment after you have removed your makeup and washed your face.
Apply with a cotton bud to your lash line and leave overnight. Wash off with warm water in the morning.
3. Latisse
Latisse is the only eyelash growth serum approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
It is used to treat patchy or thin eyelashes and has to be prescribed by a doctor.
Latisse promotes the growth of longer, thicker and darker eyelashes. You need to use the medication daily for at least a couple of months to see the full results.
It also has some potential side effects, including itchy, red eyes, dry eyes, and darkened eyelids.
Speak to your doctor to see if Latisse is suitable for you.
